Welcome to my website. I’m David McKay, and Open Book Translation is my Dutch-to-English translation business specializing in two broad areas:
My clients include major museums, scholars, design agencies, and publishing houses. I have been certified as a Dutch-to-English translator by the American Translators Association (ATA), and I belong to the Dutch translators’ organization (NGTV), Sense, and ALTA. The NLPVF, a Dutch semi-governmental organization, has approved me as a literary translator from Dutch into English.

Recent news and highlights:
On May 1, the American publisher Minotaur Books (a division of Macmillan) published The Tulip Virus by Daniëlle Hermans. This historical thriller was translated from the Dutch by David McKay of Open Book Translation. There is also an Australian edition of the translation, published by Allen & Unwin. Reviewers have called the translation “first-rate” and “flawless.” Australian reader Merryl Donn says, “I usually find translated books difficult to read. They tend to be stilted and artificial, but this translation is invisible. It is hard to believe that it was not written in English.”
Servants of the Kingdom, a historical and sociological study of the Reformed ministry in the Netherlands by David Bos, is scheduled for publication by Brill in June 2010. For this book, David McKay translated many 19th-century prose and verse passages. For a short sample, click here.
